NSG 103 – Essentials in Nursing

This course introduces students to the language of nursing, critical thinking, essential academic skills and
behaviors for students, and interpersonal skills required for success in nursing school and the nursing
profession. Focus will include exploration of various practice settings, personal expectations and goals, and
self-care strategies.

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
1. Develop self-management, academic skills, and patterns of thinking necessary for academic,
interpersonal, and professional success. (SLO #1, 3, 5)

2. Describe the role of being a student nurse and its trajectory toward licensure and practice. (SLO #1, 2, 5)

3. Identify the benefits of networking, mentoring, and participating in University and School of Nursing
and Population Health organizations and activities. (SLO #4, 5)

4. Describe various settings where nurses practice and their role within the interprofessional team. (SLO
#4, 5)

5. Demonstrate the ability to self-reflect on the interpersonal aspects of self-care, professionalism, and
accountability that are inherent in nursing. (SLO #5)
