Reflection 2 NL: Setting Priorities

New learning that most intrigued me was the section on “Survival Potential”. Hopefully, I won’t be in a situation where I would have to make decisions based on this model, however, I do see its importance. The ability to triage type of care with a specific set of parameters during an emergency is crucial to organizing and containing chaos. This module emphasizes this point by showcasing all the different types as a nurse I can use different frameworks to prioritize my treatment plan. It is easy as a busy nurse to not know how to start care on one patient, much less multiple. Being unable to recognize and understand reasonings as to why certain patients or treatments comes first will severely deplete quality of care.

By having multiple frameworks to base the prioritization of my care on, I am able to have options on how to best approach a situation. For example, the “Survival Potential” model might not be the first solution to a problem, however, knowing “ABC” is always a good first step when assessing the needs of a patient. On a broader spectrum, “Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs” can serve as a perfect guide for a long term patient that might need more than just basic pathophysiological needs. Priority setting frameworks can be a major tool in my toolbox of nursing skills that will help guide me through the rest of my career

I thoroughly enjoy reading your posts as you take the extra time to add to the writing some type of visual emphasis on the topic. Thanks for taking that approach!
