I am currently planning on staying in Maine to receive my license through examination. The state of Maine is part of the Nurse Licensure Compact and registration can be done online through the Maine.gov/boardofnursing website. Since it is done online within the website, a current picture (selfie) will be uploaded and a complete background check can be done through the same site. Thankfully the Maine Board of Nursing doesn’t require a submission of transcripts if graduating from a program in Maine. UNE itself will submit a form after Program Completion which is on May 13th for us.
For nurses who require disciplinary action in the state of Maine, complaints/ charges are investigated by the BON on its own capacity or from a written complaint filed with the Board where the person accused is notified and required to respond within 30 days. If it needs to be escalated, the Board can either request an informal conference or just go through the levels of disciplinary actions. These actions can include consent agreements to voluntary surrender of license. It is important to be aware of your own place of work’s policies and procedures, on top of the state of Maine’s laws and regulations to protect one’s license. Unfortunately, ignorance with these practices or circumventing the practices themselves for shortcuts is often the case for people who receive disciplinary action from the board. Educating and keeping oneself up to date is crucial in protecting the license that we worked hard to receive.
