How I Made a Difference

One of the most meaningful and impactful gifts a nurse can provide a patient is a simple conversation. It might be less skill based than usual nursing tasks, such as setting up IV drips, inserting an NG tube or providing wound care, but still just as important. I met this patient during one of my clinical days and it is a memory that I know will stick with me as I progress through the program and for the rest of my career. I have always been a shy and reserved person, not really knowing how to start a conversation, especially with those who are older than me. I saw them sitting in their room alone just staring at the window and I felt compelled to go into their room and introduce myself. They were immediately delighted that someone came in to ask how they were doing. I completed my tasks that I was asked for and had time to sit down and talk. I asked them if it were okay if I pulled up a seat next to them and get to know them. They smiled and was excited to talk about anything they wanted. After talking with them for a time, I had to go back to check on my other patients. That patient was so grateful that I took the time to get to know them and see how they were doing while they were alone. Throughout my whole shift, they would look out towards the door and wave at me everytime I walked by. It really touched my heart that my simple conversation made this person’s day. Even though it wasn’t showcasing any of the impressive nursing skills I’ve come to learn, it still made me feel like I was making a difference in this person’s care and experience in healthcare. I hope to give everyone being taken care of a sense of importance and reassurance that they not just another sick patient in a room.
